Singapore is probably the champion in this category. If you have 8 to 12 hours in Singapore, its very worth going out. The airport is close to the city, immigration is fast, and you can easily reach downtown for a meal or a short walk. Many people even plan longer stops here on purpose.

Istanbul is another excellent choice, especially for flights between Europe and Asia. With a layover of 7 hours or more you can exit the airport and visit the old city center. The distance is manageable and the city offers so much to see even in a few hours.

Doha has improved massively in recent years. The airport is modern and if you have a long daytime layover you can go into the city. The contrast between the futuristic airport and the traditional parts of Doha makes it interesting. Its surprisingly easy to organize a short city visit.

Tokyo is great when you have an overnight or full day stop. From Narita or Haneda airport you can reach the city relatively quickly. Even a few hours in Tokyo gives you a strong taste of Japan and breaks the long journey nicely.

Lisbon works well for transatlantic flights. If your connection is long enough, leaving the airport to see the historic center or have a proper Portuguese meal is totally doable. The city feels relaxed and welcoming even for short visits.

Bangkok is useful for anyone traveling around Asia. The airport is connected well enough that with 6–10 hours you can go into the city, eat real Thai food, and come back without rushing. Just avoid rush hour traffic if possible.

Seoul is also worth considering. The airport is efficient and if you have enough time the city offers clean streets, good food and interesting atmosphere. Many travelers use it as a pleasant break on longer Asia routes.

What makes these cities good for layovers is a combination of factors: reasonable distance from the airport to the center, fast and simple immigration for transit passengers, safe environment, and enough interesting things to do even in a few hours.

The trick is to plan your flights so that long layovers happen in these cities rather than in places where leaving the airport is difficult or not worth it. Sometimes paying a little more or shifting your dates slightly can put a good transit city in the middle of your journey.

Instead of dreading a 10-hour layover, you can start looking forward to it as a free mini city visit. Once you learn which airports allow easy exits and which cities reward short stops, your long flights suddenly become much more bearable.

A smart traveler treats good layover cities as valuable bonuses, not as annoying delays.
